It is quite common for godiva dark chocolate to be sold throughout the world. Have you ever wondered how this well-known brand came to be? Where did the name come from? Our article in this issue will take you on a time machine and point you toward all there is to know about the Godiva chocolate brand.
Why did Godiva chocolates start and where did it come from
Belgian chocolate company Godiva, founded in 1926 by Pierre Draps, was acquired by the Turkish Yıldız Holding in November 2007 and continues today under the same name.
Under the present name, Pierre Draps opened the first shop he and his family opened in the Grand Place in Brussels. Legend has it that the name Lady Godiva was inspired by her. Founded in 1958, the company's first shop outside of Belgium was located in Paris. Eventually, in 1966, the company's products found their way to the United States, where they were only available at shopping centers. Within a year, New York City's Fifth Avenue became home to the first Godiva chocolate shop in North America.
This is how the name came to be
As mentioned previously, the name and logo for the Godiva chocolates were inspired by Lady Godiva's story, which dates back to the 11th century. In more ancient times, she was a lady married to the Lord of Coventry, Leofric. Coventry citizens were under taxation by Leofric and Goddiva cared about them. He opposed these taxes. It took multiple requests by her for Leofric to agree to reduce those taxes but under one condition. A challenge he issued to Godiva challenged her to ride naked on a horse through town in order to lessen taxes. She climbed on her horse and sauntering through the market square with only her long hair covering herself, Lady Godiva surprised everyone by joining them. It was asked that people in Coventry remain in their homes and not look out, and the people did as she asked. By the time Leofric completed her ride, the people's debts had been reduced and taxes had been lowered.
